Junior Membership

The Club recognises that the Juniors are the future of golf and has given its full support to the Junior Development Program. This provides the Club's young golfers with excellent opportunities to learn the skills of golf, to become good members of the golf club, and to participate in a variety of competitions throughout each year.

The Junior Program is largely funded from our two major Junior Tournaments with support from the Victorian Golf Foundation. It provides opportunities to play for the monthly Junior Medal, an event open to Boys and Girls and since copied by a number of other clubs, the Junior Club Championships and Junior Match Play Championships. The Program also funds the attendance of Juniors at VGA Golf Camps held each year.

The Juniors are encouraged to participate in the VGA Colts and North West Region Pennant competitions and the Club provides assistance for entries to a number of school holiday tournaments. Junior members are also encouraged to enroll with the VGA Junior Golfers Club to receive current information on tournaments and events throughout the state. The chance for inclusion in the Young Achievers Squad, regarded as the first step towards playing golf at the highest level and perhaps on to the State Junior Team, is available through this VGA program. The WGV also provides opportunities for the girls.

Our Juniors have achieved considerable success over the years; Nathan Lane and Robyn Nash, our Junior Club Champions, won State selection in 1997. Nathan won the Boys Championship of Victoria and the Medway Open, and Robyn was runner-up in the Ladies Champion of Champions all in 1998. Nathan and Matthew Crockford have represented Victoria in the PGA Junior Championships. Tara Lagan won the State Junior Girls Championship in 2000 and her sister Kate won the Herald Sun Match Play in 1998.

Our players were well represented in the City Zone Pennant win in 2000 and as many as ten Juniors in one season have played in Northern's Pennant teams. The success of the Junior Program at Northern is not only reflected in the strength of our Colts Pennant team, but also in the manner in which the Juniors present themselves at the Club.

Regular Junior Newsletters keep our players informed of Club activities and report Juniors' achievements. Our Club Professional, Scott Barradell, is involved in the Program and runs introductory clinics for new Junior members and clinics for youngsters who may be considering playing golf, and is always available with a tip to help.

Special highlights have included the club spirit and competition generated from our Super Series school holiday tournaments, our visit to the President's Cup at Royal Melbourne in 1998, and the number of Northern's Juniors who have gone on to successful professional traineeships.
