Thank you to all participants!!! Thanks also to Michael Church and all helpers who contributed to a successful day.
The Northern Open tournament, the Club's major event, is held over a four day period in February and attracts more than 600 players to play in the Ladies and Men's Open Stroke events and the Men's, Ladies and Mixed Four ball events each year. The course is at its best at this time of the year and the best amateur golfers in Victoria enter for the Annual Northern Open, Ivo Whitton Trophy, over 36 holes on the Saturday and the 27 Hole Ladies Open on the Thursday. Each year these elite golfers record great winning scores and our leading club members are challenged by the standard of the golf played. Recent winners of the Northern Open have gone on to represent the State and some have become professional golfers. While the feature events of the weekend are limited by handicap to only the leading golfers the tournament is complemented by the four ball events played on Friday and Sunday. These events draw entries from neighbouring metropolitan clubs and from players throughout the state. The fields for the Men's and Ladies Stableford events played on the Friday, and the Men's and Mixed Par events on the Sunday, are always well supported. The Northern Open is one of the most popular events in the northern suburbs. The tournament also includes a special event for the Club's sponsors which is played on the Friday. Excellent trophies are provided for all events and the tournament concludes with a dinner in the Club's dining room on Sunday evening after the final event.
Northern Junior Open
Northern's two other open events are for Junior golfers and these too attract the State's leading young players. The Northern Junior Open played in April and the Taylor Made Junior Classic played in July have built quite a reputation amongst Juniors across the state and each year have attracted full fields. Northern's Junior tournaments are recognised by the VGA as the most popular events on the junior calendar. These tournaments have been held since 1997 and have given players of all ages and all handicaps, including the under 21 year olds, the opportunity to play on Northern's great fairways, and the players keep on coming back. The Junior Open's first winner was Aaron Baddeley who at age 15 shot par in his first game on our course and is now a great international golfer. In the years since some of our winners have bettered Aaron's score but none has yet followed his path. Northern's own Tara Lagan won the girls event four years in a row and Korean Misun Cho, now a leading amateur, played one of her first events in Australia at Northern and won the open handicap.
Taylor Made Junior Classic
The Taylor Made Junior Classic, a stroke/ handicap winner provides the opportunity for the longer markers to succeed and brings out some great performances by the younger players, many of whom are playing in only their first tournaments. The highlight of this tournament however was the three-way play-off in 1999 for the open stroke event after Danny, John and Jason each shot 74. It was just as exciting as the British Open play-off in the same year. Northern has a great reputation for its Open Tournaments and the Club enjoys the challenge of planning, organising and running these events each year. The tournaments demonstrate what a great course we have and when our visitors leave they mark these events in their diaries for the year ahead.
